Is Your Sweet Tooth Killing You?

It’s no wonder why type 2 diabetes is soaring in the U.S. As of 2012, about 30 million Americans had diabetes, and 1 in 4 people were unaware they had it. Furthermore, 86 million adults (1 in 3 people!) have pre-diabetes. If this trend continues, 1 in 5 Americans will have diabetes by 2025, and 1 in 3 by 2050.

Excess sugar consumption is a major factor in the development of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Consuming excess sugar tends to: 1) stroke your appetite, not satisfy it, 2) become addictive, 3) promote obesity and being overweight, and 4) may be linked to cancer production and may affect cancer survival. (And let’s not think artificial sweeteners are much better as they present their own set of issues!)

The recommended daily amount of sugar intake is 6 teaspoons for women and 9 teaspoons for men.
