Most people believe that health is dictated by their genes alone. If their parents were not healthy then they believe that they have bad genes, and therefore, they will have bad health. Similarly, some believe that if their parents were healthy, they have good genes, and therefore they will have good health. According to a 2010 Yale study, the truth is only 25% of your health comes from genes, but 75% of your health is based on lifestyle choices. Research has shown that good or bad health is not a pure reflection of your genes, but it’s the expression of those genes that creates the state of your health. Your gene expression is dictated by the environment you live in, which is a reflection of your lifestyle choices. In other words, your diet, level of physical activity, and your thoughts either promote life and vitality or interfere with proper function.
This is empowering because ultimately, your health is in your hands. It’s your number one asset and your responsibility. Your body is designed to self-heal, self-regulate, and thrive! When you sleep at night, what tells your heart to beat or lungs to breath? What tells the cut on your arm to heal? In a cold environment, what tells your body to shiver in order to create heat? What tells the sperm how to find the egg and then fertilize it?
Our bodies were created with a magnificent design and it knows what to do, how to do, and when to do whatever is needed for life and survival. So, are symptoms the culprit, the disease, or the cause of disease? None of the above. Symptoms are simply red flags that the body raises to alert us of an underlying deficiency or toxicity causing the dysfunction.
Then why does our current medical model treat symptoms as though they are the disease instead of addressing the underlying cause? This fallacy is the main reason that the overall health of U.S. citizens is disproportionately lower despite the fact that U.S. healthcare spending is one of the highest in the world.
Our philosophy in neurologically-based chiropractic is to address the cause of dysfunction and not merely to manage symptoms alone. We know that your nervous system is the sole coordinator of every cell, tissue, and organ in your body. Therefore, a thorough analysis of this “master system” is vital to uncovering the state of your health and well-being. If there is any interference to the function of this system then the health of your body as a whole will be altered and decreased, whether you experience pain or not.
